Cabin Inspiration

Tomorrow (01/20/12) we pick up the keys to the vacation cabin. It will be great to spend some time in the home without a realtor,inspector,appraiser or contractor in the way. Our goal is to complete all the necessary repairs in the next 3 months to make the property comfortable. In the meantime, I wanted to share one of the many inspiring spaces that capture the look and style I hope to bring to our cabin.

This home designed by Suzanne Kasler was the image that immediately came to me when I first saw our cabin. It was featured in Architectural Digest's June 2009 issue. This property is located in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.

Like this design, I envisioned classic European accent furniture and accessories such as a gilded baroque and/or Federal style convex mirrors anchored by neoclassical sconces with an antique brass finish.

There is mixture of rich leather,paisley,tartan plaid and animal print fabrics on the sofa,chairs and drapery treatments. Ornate framed oil paintings of countryside landscapes and large tapestries adorn the walls.

The rustic walls and floors add the warmth and coziness to give the formal pieces a calming and welcoming environment.

The Empire style chairs anchored by the yellow gold upholstered chairs on the end compliments the space perfectly! Suzanne did such an amazing job bringing everything together in this home.

I saw the Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol the other day. It was fantastic. The movie opened with a scene in Budapest, Hungary. Coincidentally, I had just read an article about the disturbing state of politics in Hungary.

Watching the views of the Budapest in Mission Impossible reminded me how much I enjoyed the city when I was lucky enough to visit in 2006

I hope the current party that has control of the country does not return it to the isolated and inaccessible state it was in while under Communist control. However, the situation is not good and more Americans should be aware of what is happening.

The current government is controlled by conservative Prime Minister Obistan who has formed alliances with right wing groups that hold nationalistic ideologies that espouse antisemitism and hatred of Romas ("gypsys").

The new government is restricting free speech and has rewritten the country's constitution in such a way that EU officials and the United States believe make it impossible for change over next several generations.

Secretary of State Clinton sent a letter to Prime Minister Orban expressing concern about the future of democracy in Hungary. European leaders have also shared their concern with Orban.

His reaction has been combative and he has refused any suggestions to stop his apparent take over of Hungary's press and judiciary. The European Union is equally concerned that he is moving toward a take over of Hungary's Central Bank.

Not only would it be a horrible loss for the Hungarians if they have their rights taken from them, it would be a loss to the world to lose access to the country and Budapest, the "Pearl of the Danube".

Although the view from our room was spectacular, I thought the room decor was a bit too minimally decorated and modern for my personal taste.

We enjoyed both lunch and dinner at the Cafe Pierrot in old town Buda.

The Piano

One of the items on my wishlist for 2012(hopefully before the fall/winter holiday season) is a baby grand piano. Aside from being a terrific musical instrument, pianos can add grandeur and sophistication to any setting.

I have always wanted a grand piano but since neither Papa Dan or I know how to play(or are patient enough to learn at this point), I couldn't justify buying one since they aren't cheap. Luckily, our little guy shows an interest in learning after seeing his cousin play.

We have a few neighbors and friends whom I consider music aficionados who have convinced me that it's never too late to learn for us and that having the instrument in the house will make him feel like it is part of his home and he will not be intimidated to learn when he is old enough to take lessons.

I love the thought of hosting a cocktail party with guests surrounding the piano playing and signing their favorite tunes.

Or, a cabaret theme party where the guests entertain us with their favorite jazz,loung or torch song.

Of course, I also imagine my decorating the home for the holidays and family and friends gathering around the piano to play and sing carols.

This is the rear foyer of our home where I plan to replace the center round table with a piano. The 2 slipper chairs,leather armchair(corner right) and desk(corner left) you see in this space will also be removed to allow for more room.

Home Inspection

We completed the home inspection and based on the seller's disclosures the findings were unsurprising. The home may require tenting for pests and some dry rot, plumbing and electrical repairs will need immediate attention before we can start on any cosmetic work i.e. new floors,light fixtures and appliances. The roof looks good for another decade. Not bad for a 78 year old log cabin in the redwoods! Below are more photos, as promised, of the interior and a diagram of the floor plan.

For all those who aspire to a maximalist utopia, there can be no greater spiritual home than that of Sir John Soane, in the Lincoln’s Inn Field area of London. If one were ever to tire of Paris for a day, then within two and a half hours by Eurostar, the joys of Georgian London await.

John Soane

Sir John Soane (1753-1837), the son of a bricklayer, became one of the greatest architects in England. He designed the Bank of England building, parts of the Houses of Parliament and the Dulwich Picture Gallery. He also designed his own house over a number of years. It was an imaginative and daring design, with light bathing the interiors from above, and dramatic spaces opening up all around. His understanding of the use of space and light was revolutionary, and perfect for displaying his extraordinary collection of antique artifacts and art. And what art he collected - paintings by Hogarth, Canaletto, Turner and Reynolds; antique sculpture; plaster casts; architectural models showing different building techniques and a huge Egyptian sarcophagus. The artifacts fill the house in every available space, reflected in hundreds of mirrors that dot the walls.
A Gift To Art Lovers
So passionate a teacher was he that, upon his appointment as Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy in 1806, John Soane began to organize his vast collection of art works, books, casts and models so that his students could come and see them and sketch them. He created his own museum from his possessions, and people have been visiting it ever since. He wished it to be bequeathed to 'students and amateurs of art and architecture', and his wish was granted. In 1833 he negotiated an Act of Parliament safeguard the future of the house. It has been preserved exactly as it was the day Sir John died in 1837.

Labyrinthine Design
Described as “...one of the most complex, intricate, and ingenious series of interiors ever conceived” by The Oxford Dictionary of Architecture, a wander round the various rooms certainly confirms this. Interconnected rooms joined by corridors and doorways on several levels take you on a serpentine route through the house, where no square inch is the same as its neighbor. One of the delights of the building is the range of levels, which lead you from the brightly lit top of the house, down through to the dark and gothic-like basement rooms, with many detours on the way. This contrast between light and dark make the house a complex experience, and the architecture challenges your expectations as well as the art works. The design ideas have influenced architects and designers from all over the world, especially the use of domed light-well ceilings.

Artworks
Crammed with sculpture, drawings and priceless paintings, Soane shows his superb taste off well, by careful placing of items in a totally unstuffy, un-gallerylike manner. He places things next to each other that just look good that way, rather than insisting they come from the same period, or are of a similar value. He has an eye for symmetry and clearly possesses the knack of artistic ensemble that some seem born with. The furniture is simple and exquisite too, and of the highest quality. There’s not a microfiber sofa in sight here. It is all totally original and authentic, just as Soane would have bought it in the 19^th Century. He might have just stepped out of the room. In the picture room, where many of the most important paintings are displayed, there is evidence that Soane finally began to run out of wall space, but he overcomes this with ingenious invention. The paintings are mounted on wall panels, which can be folded back to reveal more paintings behind them. Simple, clever and highly inventive.

The Sarcophagus
One of the star attractions is the Sarcophagus of King Seti I, a Pharaoh of the XIXth Dynasty in Egypt. It was discovered in 1825. Now housed in the Sepulchral Chamber at the back of the Soane house, the alabaster tomb has always attracted attention. Regarded as one of the most important finds ever made in Egypt, Soane managed to beat off opposition from the British Museum to purchase the treasure for a mere £2,000. He was so delighted with it he held three days of parties to celebrate, inviting over a thousand people to view it, lighting the room and the sarcophagus with oil lamps. What parties they must have been.

Sad Life
For all the richness of his life in art and architecture, Soane was an unhappy man. He was very sad that neither of his two sons shared his passions. The elder son, George, died; the other was a drunken idler, who wasted money and, when he later became a writer, mocked his father’s collection in newspaper articles, and was promptly disinherited. After his wife died in 1815 John Soane lived a lonely and isolated life in his beautiful house, which he called his ‘Mansion of Woe’. But he never stopped collecting. No true lover of art and architecture should miss the chance of a visit on a trip to London. But be patient, and visit on a night when there is a candle-lit tour, and marvel at the vision of the greatest collector in the world.

This 1930's 3 bedroom 1 bathroom bank owned fixer upper log cabin was listed just a week ago. We fell in love with the pictures and immediately scheduled an appointment with our realtor to view the house this past weekend.

Château du Champ de Bataille

Here I go again, taking a cyber trip to the environs around Paris; in real life I have been unwilling to use any of my precious travel time to venture out of the incomparable City of Lights. However, the more I learn about the Chateau region the more likely I will be taking trips outside of Paris on my next visit.

An hour away, in Normandy, is the Château du Champ-de-Bataille, a baroque castle built in 17th century that has been carefully restored and artfully decorated with furniture and objets d'art from a mix of French styles...all fit for royalty.

Laudree Tea room

Purchased in 1992 by Jacques Garcia, a French architect and designer. His accomplishments include creating the interiors of the beautiful Laduree tea room on the Champs-Elysees and the Hotel Costes. In 1999 he published his first book, Decorating in the French style which followed up with a new edition in 2005. He also currently has a wonderful high end furniture line, The Jacques Garcia Collection with Baker furniture.

Prior to the restoration by Jacques Garcia, the story of this castle includes being plundered after the French Revolution and years of abandonment.

At one point, in the early 20th century this grand home was used as a hospital. Over the next 15 years, Mr. Garcia revived the Chateau.

Descriptions and photographs of the Chateau's interiors show it is elaborately filled with beautiful furnishings and artwork from the 17th and 18th Centuries.

Included in the decorations are ancient manuscripts,tapestries,rugs and other rare objects.

The home boast 15 bedrooms, each with its own bathrooms, a hunting salon and a two story chapel.

In addition to his renovations of the building, Mr. Garcia also accomplished the restoration of the Chateau's 94 acres of gardens.

The estate has been open to the public since Mr. Garcia purchased it; even during the renovation.

Boaz Mazor has worked for Oscar de la Renta for forty years, having now earned that wonderful “At Large” title (although technically he is a vice-president) and this is one of those conversations that made us feel we had met someone who really relishes and celebrates life. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. This year our family spent the holiday at home with just the four of us...Papa Dan, Daniel,myself and Cocco.

Although we've enjoyed and missed the large gatherings with our extended families in the past, it was really nice to celebrate with just our small family.

It was great to wake up late and lounge in the family room in front of the fireplace watching holiday movies, surfing the internet and playing a few board games. A couple hours before dinner, we took a long family stroll around the neighborhood enjoying the chilled weather.

Dinner was over the top delicious. Papa Dan literally prepared a feast. Brined turkey, chicken liver stuffing, steamed asparagus,mashed potatoes and gravy made with turkey drippings,cream,cherry and stock .

A bottle of Cambria Chardonnay,Earthquake Syrah and sparkling cider for the little guy. For dessert, vanilla ice cream with Pumpkin and Berry Pie topped with fresh home made whipped cream.

Inspirations For Fine Traditional Living-Chateau De Mirambeau

Move over Cinderella. While this estate may be called a chateau, it is actually a castle fit for a fairy tale.

The prestigious Chateau de Mirambeau is near Bordeaux and Cognac.

Chateau de Mirambeau is one more reason I have to venture out of Paris the next time I go to France.

This aristocratic residence has gone through many incarnations.

It began as a medieval fortress and underwent numerous sieges, destruction and fires. Its present form happened under the ownership of Count Charles Nicolas Duchâte.

In 2002 it underwent a complete restoration and renovation. The castle ia surrounded by lush parkland.

The building consists of a body of neo-Louis XIII, framed by two pavilions of the same style, and two asymmetrical wings.

One of them is marked by Renaissance influences, the other by the neo-medieval influences .

The entrance, flanked by two cylindrical towers, is one of the oldest parts of the building, dating back at least to the seventeenth century. Today, visitors can stay as the hotel guests of current owner Mr Valter Mainett.

The Chateau de Mirambeau Bordeaux offers a choice of 23 luxury rooms including 9 Junior Suites and Suites, each decorated differently in 19th century bourgeois style.

I just love the decadence throughout this public space.

The Chateau has an indoor pool, two tennis courts, a second swimming pool and a fitness circuit.

A Fall Asian Inspired Setting For A French Treat

Happy Tablescape Thursday! This fall Asian inspired table for 4 was set this past Saturday evening. The delicious beef pastry filled with mushroom paste treat was prepared by Papa Dan from a recipe out of Julia Child's 1968 published Volume Two, Mastering the Art of French Cooking book.

Kitchen Accomplished...The Reveal

Before:

This is why you never saw me post about our kitchen. The home

was built in 1927. When we purchased the home it had the 1985

remodel pictured above. Although we recognized the space was

outdated and not our taste, it somehow didn't bother us so long

as it was functional. As a result, we procrastinated in

updating the space. In fact, the reason we finally renovated

this year was because the appliances(refrigerator and stove)

were starting to give up and the ceramic tiles around the sink

began to fall off. Also, I've been propositioned to enter our

home in the neighborhood's annual home tour for 2012. A

really terrific designer and blogger Katie Denham of Katiedid also lives

here (another fact I can use to boast that our area is the

best!) and featured her home in the 2009 home tour. Her home is still being raved

about today and her kitchen was a show stopper and a stand out

favorite. I knew I had to do something to our space before I

opened the doors to the public.

AFTER:

The total cost for this project including all appliances was

just under $38K. The inspiration behind the design is French

Country.

The size of this space prior to our restoration was just 100

square ft.

Because of its location and our budget, we were only

able to add 10 more square feet to the small space. We took

that space from the adjacent hallway behind the East wall of

the kitchen located directly behind the old electric oven which

contained a narrow utility closet that we only used to store

some tools.

Another affordable proposed solution which was within the

budget was to open the kitchen up to the current formal dining

room behind the south wall. For our family, that was not an

option. Both Dan and I are big lovers of traditional formal

dining rooms and so joining the two rooms was quickly ruled

out.

Due to the distance of the cook top from the main sink, a small

vegetable sink and faucet with pull out spray was installed for

convenient pot filling and pasta draining.

The small sink will have a round cutting board with a pull out

hole that fits perfectly over the sink for extra prep space on

the counter. While we wait for the builder to supply it, we

have improvised with this cutting board.

I am very happy with all the details including the wallpaper,

dentil moulding and door appliques. We thought it gave the

space a warm elegance typically found in French Country

interiors.

Love the $15.00 Ikea chalkboard.

Coordinating counter height rolling cart that double duties as

as a serving cart for the dining room.

A nice alternative for kitchens with very limited counter

space.

The cart is a great mobile prep station that can be

conveniently rolled anywhere in the space or out of the way

into the pantry or laundry/mud room.

Removable shelves to allow for use as a small eating space.
With the new kitchen, Papa Dan will be guest posting about his

favorite recipes preparations (move over Julie...its going to be Dan and Julia).

The Evolution Of A Room

After a few hours of rummaging through photo boxes, I managed to find images of our home reaching back 16 years when we first purchased the property. I hope you enjoy them.

The furniture from the previous homeowner, circa 1995.

When we first moved in, I was drawn toward an eclectic mixture of modern and tribal ethnic designs. I attempted to create this atmosphere for about 3 years. Prior to our home purchase, I decorated my rentals with 80's modern white over stuffed sofas and black lacquered accent pieces until I moved into Southwestern Santa Fe style with Adirondack chairs, Navajo rugs and baskets.

After: 1998

In 1998 I took my first trip to Europe; we spent a week in France and 2 weeks in Italy. The trip transformed me. I became enamored with European Classicism and I began my love affair with traditional interiors. I subscribed to Architectural Digest and there was no turing back. This was my first attempt to recreate the sumptuous interiors I saw in my travels.

The architectural prints were purchased at an arts and crafts fair next to the Spanish Steps in Rome. I loved sharing their provenance with friends and family when they visited. It made me feel like a globetrotter.

Above the mantle is a painting of Venice we got on a subsequent trip to Italy. See the vase of flowers? I cannot believe how long I have been trying to fool everyone with the silk yellow tulips; I still use them today when I'm too cheap to buy fresh.

After: 2007

By 2007, after visiting several European countries, I began to refine my layered style by creating a more neutral color palette that would allow me to continue layering but with textures and complimenting tones.

Today: 2011

Well, so much for total neutrality. When I found the floral fabric for the ottoman and coordinating pillows, I couldn't continue my monochromatic theme any longer. I had to have that fabric in my living room so, Voila!

I also added chair rail and picture frame molding in the room.

My only disappointment with the room are the drapes. I wanted the more relaxed look of the Empire style but was mistakenly given the Kingston style.

I purchased the ottoman from Ikea and upholstered it with a Schumacher remnant I purchased earlier this year. I made 6 matching accent pillows with the leftover fabric.

Kitchen Remodel Update

Our kitchen update is moving along smoothly and faster than we expected. We couldn't be happier with our contractor and his team. They have been ahead of schedule the entire time even with our last minute changes. I cannot wait to share the before and after images in the coming weeks. I purchased the above light fixture from Lumens which I think will fit perfectly with our updated look.

The new oak top nail wood floors match the rest of the homes 86 year old floors. This was the only part of the renovation we did not like. In fact, we spent 2 nights away at a hotel until the strong varnish odor went away. It was a dusty,loud and smelly process but a necessary to get the floors to look like they were part of the original wood floors throughout the home.

This is a sample of the soft white cabinets with a antiqued metallic gold glaze finish. However, I have since contacted the cabinetmakers to ask that the gold is rubbed out a bit more for a more realistic aged patina. Brush chrome cabinet knobs and pulls to compliment the stainless steel appliances.

Sample of the granite for the counter tops scheduled to be installed tomorrow 9/30. Although this stone is beautiful and I know we'll be happy with it, it was not our first choice. We really wanted Carrara marble but it was more expensive and our friends and some neighbors aware that we are heavy(and sloppy)red wine lovers thought it would be a messy marriage. We thought this white stone was a good compromise. I just hope I don't kick myself when I see or visit a home with my dream marble.

A sample of the glossy white subway tiles with accent rope for the backsplash which is scheduled for installation this Saturday and possibly Sunday.

I found and purchased this ceramic high relief online from Anderson Ceramics located in Round Rock, Texas. The artist/owner Neal was very nice and accommodating to my last minute request in getting the piece to me in a week. This will be the backsplash over the cooktop.

This wallpaper(Pattern#:SS21303 ) is from the Cottage English collection by Sandpiper Studios. Because of the small size of the kitchen, there isn't a lot of visible wall space which is why I thought a large pattern would compliment the kitchen beautifully. No one in our circle of friends and family share our love for wallpaper. They consider it either too over the top or something grandma would appreciate. We're hoping to prove them wrong.

This wallpaper, also from the same Cottage English collection will be the background for the glass door cabinets below.

The Chateau de Bagnols

The Chateau de Bagnols is situated between the River Saône to the east and the River Azergues to the southwest in the Beaujolais region which is considered one of France's most beautiful and historically rich areas.

It is approximately 40 minutes from Lyon. It was built in the 1200s as a medieval fortress that offered refuge for its owners and the villagers throughout times of violence.

By the 1400s, Lyon was a prosperous commercial center and the château was embellished by its new owners, the de Balzacs. In 1490, two years before Columbus sailed across the Atlantic, King Charles VIII visited the de Balzac residence.

To honor the king, the royal cout of arms was carved into the stone fireplace of what is now the dining room. The fortress like aspect of the chateau was lessened when large windows were cut into the exterior walls in 1509.

This change was possible because the violence of the medieval period had passed into the peace of the renaissance. The transformation of the Chateau continued in the 1600s with the addition of tapestries and wall paintings and the removal of the draw bridges.

As silk manufacturing grew in Lyon, the interiors of the house were influenced by the italian artisans associated with the industry. By the French revolution, Bagnols was an elegant country estate.

Aside from the revolutionaries' attempt to erase the royal fleur de lyes symbols from the fireplace in the dining room, the chateau remained unscathed.

Empire Versus Kingston....Your Input Please

Would you describe the style of these valances as Empire or Kingston? Or, do you believe they qualify as both? I ordered Empire valances back in June of this year and this is what I received.

This is the actual image I sent via email to the business back in June. I indicated that it is the exact style I wanted. I described the style as Empire. I also provided the business with the fabric which were 6 vintage damask drapery panels. The business responded to my request within 24 hours with the labor costs to execute this look and also confirming that the fabric I provided was sufficient to achieve the look I wanted.

Notice how the pleats originate and terminate on the top of the board? This is what distinguishes the difference between the Empire style and the Kingston. For me, the distinction was important. I have always felt the pleats on the Kingston and Austrian valances resembled the inside of a coffin. Furthermore, the Empire valance isn't as formal. The swags/pleats are more natural looking which was important.

Yesterday I contacted the business to express my disappointment and explained my reasons. This is the response I received:

There are so many places that refer to the same treatment with different names. In my 18 years of experience and I'm a window treatments designer and I've worked with other workrooms, we've always referred to your pictures you have in the reverse (i.e., your pictures of a kingston as an empire and your pictures of an empire as a kingston). Just like pinch pleats are called french pleats, fan pleats, calypso pleats, three pleats, etc.

But with the fabric panels, that we were given, we would not of been able to produce the pleats to originate from the top of the board, because that requires more fabric to produce.

My comments:

First, if they saw the image I had sent them and recognized that I would need MORE fabric in order for them to achieve the same look as the image, why didn't they convey that to me? Why would you take it upon yourself to improvise and deviate from the image I sent and assume I will accept your solution without first consulting with me for approval?
Secondly, just doing a simple "google" asking for the differences between the Empire and Kingston valances, you will find that definitions are consistent about distinctive differences.
In addition, the company's very own website explains the difference which contradicts the fabricator's response about their interpretation between an Empire and a Kingston. Hello?

The Empire swag has pleats that stack on top of the swag. This makes the valance look like the horns are pulling up the swags. To complete the look, more attention is given to the top point of the horn to complement the empire construction.

Kingston-

The pleats on a Kingston swag are located along the sides of the swags and are hidden behind the horns. This gives it a look of a softly pleated austrian shade.

Graceful swags are pleated to the top of the board. This style is beautiful alone or over draperies.

The Empire has pleats that stack on top of the mount board. The Kingston pleats develop behind the horns below the board top. The Empire is an easier construction.

Finally, I find it hard to believe that an 18 year veteran of the industry has never come across this technical issue on the difference between the two styles. I could not find anything that supports her definition that the only difference between the two styles is that the Empire has more pleats which was her initial reason prior to me sending her the above links supporting my case that in fact there is a fabrication difference between the two.

At this point, I am stuck with this look. The company has offered to eliminate some of the pleats as a solution. My other concern is that the fabric clearly does not have the same vibrancy and sheen as before because of the ironing process involved and I just don't want them to put it through the same method again causing the fabric to look more worn and faded. A $1,500.00 dollar failure. What's worse is that I liked the people I dealt with and thought they were very nice. I am just disappointed they weren't able to deliver the product I wanted.

Kitchen Remodel

Today we finally began construction on a long overdue kitchen update. The demolition crew arrived at 7am this morning. The loud banging followed 40 minutes later non-stop until 3pm. Our poor chow chow Cocco refused to come in the house until the workmen left for the day.

The overall look of the kitchen will be French Country inspired with a soft white finish for the cabinets, some with glass doors. cream granite countertops, oak hardwood floors,white subway tile backsplash and stainless steel appliances. The original design above consisted of a free standing stove with a 2nd separate over. However, we have since changed it to a cooktop with a double wall oven. The current completion date is scheduled for the end of September(yeah right).

This photo I found via a google search which became the inspiration for the new kitchen. I love the elegant yet warm look. Please stay tuned for future updates and before and after photos.

Missing In Action.......A Sincere Thank You

Thank you all for the kind emails regarding my absence from blogland. I was so moved by your messages expressing well wishes and hope for my return to blogging. It's been an incredibly busy summer with most of the attention on the little American.

The older he gets, the more activities we become involved in. My respect for stay at home parents continue to soar as my head spins trying to juggle maintaining a home while also giving a demanding 4 year old my full attention. Getting to the computer has been a challenge these days as anytime the little guy sees me on it, he's pulling at me to turn it off.

Updates:

Vacation house hunting-

Aside from the daily grind, we have been spending almost every free weekend in the Russian River area. Back in November, I mentioned a vacation home on the market there we really liked and we submitted an offer. Unfortunately, the home inspection report revealed much more repair work than we could afford to handle so it was back to ground zero. 3 potential properties later, we still haven't found the right fit for our family. However, we are hopeful that the perfect property will come up soon as we continue to search. I will keep you posted.

Four Seasons Flatware-

I am still pursuing a license agreement. I did submit my idea to a Lifetime Brands marketing agent back in April who seemed to like it and even said that he would present my idea in his next meeting with Lifetime Brands.

Unfortunately, 2 weeks later, he indicated they were not interested. I really wished I had been allowed to make the presentation.

I have since received lots of great advice from people in the industry which has inspired me to continue pursuing a deal. I was disappointed to learn that I missed an opportunity to attend the International Licensing Expo this past June. It is the perfect venue for meeting and presenting ideas directly to licensing agents and manufacturers. I will definitely try to be there next year. Hopefully, by then I will have a proto-type of the concept to present since I have learned it is extremely important when you only have a few minutes to win your prospects over.

Meanwhile, back at the house, I have been working on several trim projects. While the Little American might be able to interfere with my blogging, he has had to tolerate my decorating. Recently, we added chair rail and picture frame molding in the living room and rear foyer. I revealed that project in the last design post I shared.

Project Trim For Metamorphosis Monday

Happy Metamorphosis Monday!

Before: This is the center foyer located between our formal living room and family room. It was used as an extended seating area for my partner Dan's office which is also adjacent to the room. I used blue prep tape to outline the picture frame and chair rail moulding in the room.

After: The wood picture frame and chair rail moulding were purchased at Lowes. I used a 1 1/2 inch trim(colonial pattern) for the picture frame and a 3 inch chair rail(basket weave pattern) for this project.

The room furnished

This room metamorphosis cost approximately $300.00 for labor and materials. Dan and I painted the molding after it was hung and caulked by a professional.

Dan's home office is adjacent to the center foyer on its east side. Bay window seating to the left of his desk has views of the backyard.

I am not looking forward to moving the bookcases and cabinets in this space in order to add the same trim.

I also added the trim work in the formal living room. However, I want to share more of this room with you after empire valance window treatments have been installed and the 2 green velvet chairs (Craig's list finds) have been reupholstered. Picture frame and chair rail moulding

I finally found the energy(and money) to add picture frame and chair rail moulding in the living and adjacent room. Yay! I love it. It was a great solution to adding interest to the walls relieving me of the need to cover plain and boring flat walls with a picture,mirror,sconce or decorative plate.

The goal is to add the same moulding throughout the rest of the home with the exception of the family room.

Although the family room has the same dentil moulding, I want to maintain the blue and white casualness of by just installing a 36 inch high bead board wainscoting throughout. The current photos are in black and white as the arrangement of the two rooms are still in progress. I will share more photos and in color once completed. Please stay tuned.

A wonderful look into the Edwardian era. What I found most interesting was the fact that in this entire clip, I noticed only 3 individuals without a hat. It prompted me to look up the fashion etiquette during this time and found this little article via Fashion-Era:

In the Edwardian age it did not matter if you were poor or rich, old or a child, whatever the status a person wore a hat, only beggars went bareheaded. Even militant suffragettes did not campaign without a hat. The hat would be fairly functional in style and form, but a hat was still worn.

Once the Great War of 1914-18 began, fashion was influenced by the new wartime employment activities women had to engage in and the need for more practical utilitarian dress could not help but filter into what there was of mainstream fashion. Uniforms were everywhere as women did jobs once done by men and every job had a distinct uniform.

Colorful Blooms In The Valley

Enjoyed the beautiful weekend weather. I attended our neighborhood's annual home tour which was very inspiring. Finally met the amazingly talented designer and blogger Katie Denham of Katiedid. Katie designed one of the kitchens on this year's home tour which was even more breathtaking in person than the beautiful images she shared on her blog. After the tour, I attended a friend and neighbors garden party celebrating her homes 100 year old birthday this year. These are the photos I took over the weekend of her garden, the gardens of other good friends and neighbors.

Set It And They Will Come.......A Field Of Dreams

I am so excited about dinner at the County Line Harvest's(above photo) organic farm in Petaluma, California which is coordinated by Outstanding In The Field ("OITF). Since first learning about this venture, I knew I wanted to some day experience this culinary treat. This year, Dan and I along with 4 other friends will get that opportunity. The guest chef will be Charlie Parker, a bay area local from Plum in Oakland, California.

Since 1999, OITF has set long tables at farms or gardens, on mountain tops, beaches, islands or at ranches. Upon the tables, OTIF's guest chefs serve food that re-connects diners with the land and the origins of their food.

OTIF events boast meals with ingredients that are almost all local (sometimes from sourced within reach of your plate.) The chefs are usually celebrated artisans of the region. The producers of the food, the chefs and the diners all settle down at the long table to share the repast.

OTIF has prepared feasts in across North America and as far as Florence Italy. 90 events a year are stage in various fabulous settings. Below are more photos of table settings on location:

Printemps dans le jardin

The inspiration for this table setting began in February when Carolyne Roehm shared an image of a stunning table setting she created for her next design book with her Facebook friends. A week later, I found a beautiful fabric by Schumacher that immediately reminded me of Roehm's fabulous table and garden.

3 days ago while at Homegoods, I stumbled upon a set of hot pink colored stemware that again, immediately reminded me of Roehm's fabulous table and garden. I couldn't resist putting my 2 Roehm inspired finds to work. Because the fabric(10 yards) will eventually be used for an upholstered project, I did not cut it. Instead, I simply folded it carefully and evenly to resemble a tailored tablecloth.

The House On Nimes Road

I must confess that I am a closet fan of Bravo's Real Housewives. However, up until the Beverly Hills episodes, I was a casual viewer. The opulent and lavish lifestyle and homes of these women made it hard for me NOT to watch.

I especially love the estate of the beautiful and often funny Lisa Vanderpump. But, what really took my breath away was the palatial estate you see here of her real estate developer friend Mohamed Hadid.

In the episode where Hadid's home was featured some of the wives were having dinner there. Lisa introduced him simply as her good friend who is a real estate developer.

She mentioned the homeowners as Mohamed and Julia. No last name or other information was shared about the hosting couple.

So, after the episode, I quickly google'd Bravo's website to see if the show shared more information about Mohamed on it's website.

Unfortunately, there was nothing available on this mysterious host. I continued my online sleuthing and finally found out the full name of the owner of this beautiful estate.

It turns out Mohamed Hadid , is the developer for several of the Ritz Carlton hotels, including my favorite location in Central Park. I shared a post about the design firm that worked with Hadid Development here.

The woman named Julia mentioned in the Real Housewives episode apparently shared the home with Hadid during the filming of the episode.

However, it was Hadid's ex-wife, a former dutch Ford model name Yolanda who is credited for the homes interiors. Yolanda made celebrity news a few months back with the announcement of her engagement to legendary songwriter David Foster.

A forbes.com press article indicated Yolanda also contributed to the interior designs for the 15 Ritz Carlton hotels that Hadid developed. The chief designer that also worked on the project was the Frank Nicholson Design firm.

The article further makes note that although she is not a professional designer, her extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia collecting art and antiques and working closely with other design professionals on commercial projects have clearly influenced her tastes and provided a foundation for creating beautiful interiors.

The Bel Air estate sold last year for a reduced(from 85 Mil) price of 72 Million dollars. Both Hadid's Bel Air and Holmby Hills (see below) estates interiors were the design inspirations of Yolanda.

Both estate's interiors in my opinion, closely resemble the 5 star luxury hotel in Central Park with its warm yet rich colors and lines.

Scandal:

As an interesting aside, the creators of these gilded hotels have a tarnished reputation in some circles. You certainly won't find some of their past partners or U.S. Treasury officials resting their heads on the plush pillows at the Red Carnation Hotels. Stanley and Bea Tollman fled the United States in 2003 after they were charged with tax irregularities and bank fraud related to their sale of the economy lodging chain Days Inn. Defaults on loans against the Days Inn chain are part of the allegations. Charges were dropped against the Tollman's in exchange for a 2009 plea agreement and the promise to pay the United States $60,000,000.00 over 5 years.

Introducing The Four Seasons Flatware

Well, here it is..my concept for revolutionizing flatware! Interchangeable handles. The above drawing is the rendering I submitted with my provisional patent application. The handle designs were created to provide potential manufacturers with an example of different looks.

The key point of this product is to give consumers the option of changing the style/color/theme of their tabletop by changing their utensil handles with just one set of flatware. The potential varieties are endless. For example, a rainbow collection with 4 different colors would be a fun design. Or, a holiday collection is another great idea. The handles can be made of industry standard stainless steel or other durable and washable acrylics such as resin,nylon etc.

Now that the provisional patent has been filed, I can present the concept to manufacturers to find out what they think and advise if the concept is cost prohibitive.

The provisional patent was important for three reasons:

1) It prevents anyone from stealing the idea.
2) It assures manufacturers that the idea is an original(patent infringement) and is not already in the market.
3) Finally, it allows a full year from the date of filing to sample the marketplace to determine if your product/concept has potential(demand,production costs,sustainability).

The Perfectly Made Bed- David Monn

Found an interesting article in the latest Departures issue by Event Designer David Monn:

The key to a perfectly made bed starts with crisp, unwrinkled sheets. My secret: Once washed, fold them up as small as possible, roll tightly and put in the freezer overnight. Yes, people will call you crazy, but trust me, it works. The next day, simply shake them out, iron them and put them on the bed.

When it comes time to add the top sheet, include a foot fold, a trick for creating extra room in the sheets at the foot of the bed so your feet don’t feel pinned down. They do it at London’s Lanesborough Hotel, and it felt so comfortable that I asked the butler to teach me his method. Leave eight inches of sheet to spare at the head of the bed (this will fold down later over your blanket). At the foot of the bed, take the sheet in both hands and fold an eight-inch pleat toward yourself. Then add the blanket, fold down the overhang at the head and tuck in all around. It’s very simple, but it makes all the difference sliding into bed at night!

We all have probably caught a glimpse of the deluxe environment offered by exclusive touring trains in the movie "The Orient Express" The title of that film was taken from one of the most famous of these trains.

The Orient Express offered elite travel to the ultra wealthy and royal adventurers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Affluent travelers could ensconce themselves in wood paneled, carpeted and exquisitely furnished and chandelier lit cars as they crossed the continent.

Tablescapes Inspired Innovation

Since the beginning of January 2009, I have enjoyed participating in fellow blogger Susan's Tablescape Thursday event which has been a wonderful growing experience that has enhanced my appreciation for tableware. Thank you Susan!!!

Just 2 years later, as a result of all the inspiration and ideas, a small design concept for tableware came to mind. I've decided to see if perhaps this concept has potential in the marketplace.
Last week I successfully completed the first leg of a two step U.S. patent process by conducting a patent search to ensure the originality of the concept.
Yesterday, I finished the second step by completing and submitting the required application for a provisional patent along with a visual drawing/sketch of the idea. Once I receive an official date filed, I can publicly share and market the concept to manufacturers or anyone interested without fear of someone reclaiming the concept as their own.

Who is Isabelle de Borchgrave?

Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting the Pulp Fashion exhibition by Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave at San Francisco's Legion Of Honors Museum. Other than not being allowed to take photographs, I was not disappointed. Borchgrave's brilliant talent and attention to detail is evident in each piece showcased in the exhibit.

If you aren't familiar with de Borchgrave, she is renowned for creating all her masterpieces made only of paper. That's right, from the costumes to the jewelry and accessories. All paper. If you get an opportunity to see her work in person, I encourage you to do so.

This first stunning 18th century panniers(french basket) dress, one of a couple in the "à la française" collection was created in May 2001 for the Papiers à la Mode exhibit.

It is also featured at the Legion Of Honors, Pulp Fashion exhibit along with the following costumes. The palatial backdrop for de Borchgrave's costumes are from the book "Paper Illusions: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave" by writer and photographer duo Barbara and Rene Stoeltie.
